Children's Congress 2011

JDRF President and CEO Jeffrey Brewer invites you to apply for JDRF's Children's Congress 2011.  Visit http://cc.jdrf.org/ to learn more and apply today!

To sumbit your application online, click HERE.

Children's Congress brings more than 150 children with type 1 diabetes and their families to Washington, D.C.  Children's Congress participants represent all 50 states and the District of Columbia. They meet with Members of Congress and other key federal decision-makers to help educate them about the critical need for federal funding for type 1 diabetes research.

Applicants must be between the ages of 4 and 17 and have type 1 diabetes. All applications must be received by JDRF by 5pm EDT on Monday, October 4, 2010. You can view a list of frequently asked questions regarding the application process by clicking here.

Children's Congress inspires lawmakers to remember the children who live with type 1 diabetes when appropriating funds for medical research and voting on other important federal issues relating to diabetes. Our children's stories, told in their own words, are more powerful than almost any other type of legislator education.

To learn more about Children's Congress 2011 and to complete the application process, visit the Children's Congress website at http://cc.jdrf.org/ or email JDRF at childrenscongress@jdrf.org.

Want to Tell the World Your Story?

Whether you have diabetes yourself or you are living with the disease through supporting others, it's time to tell your story.

Dr. Jean Norris, a type 1 diabetes for 24 years, knows the impact diabetes has on the entire family as well as friends.  She also knows that many people manage the hurdles of life in their own way.  Jean is seeking volunteers and nominations for interviews to be included in an upcoming book, "No Sugar Added - Straight talk from those living with Diabetes."

If you, or someone you know has a story, tip, advice or inspirational words to help those with this disease, please submit the information by clicking below or you can reach Jean directly at drjean@nortonnorris.com or by calling (708) 478-1144.  A portion of the proceeds from this book will go towards helping find the cure through JDRF.

Dr. Jean Norris writes:
I welcome any and all submissions.  Our research assistant will call and schedule interviews with those who submit their information for consideration in the book.

To learn more, or to share your story, please visit http://www.nosugaradded.org/.

JDRF in the news!

Please view the below link to read a great article in The Beverly Review today highlighting the story of 3-year old Sean McKee and his family.  The McKee's family team, Captain Sean’s Crew, will head to Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Hills on October 3rd to continue their efforts to find a cure!

The Countdown has begun...

Walk Day is 3 Weeks Away!

Are you and your teammates registered yet?  If not, register today, and encourage your family and friends to do the same, at www.jdrfillinois.org

There is still plenty of time to fundraise!  Utilize Walk Central to send out donation e-mails.  Raise $100 quick by asking 10 people for $10!

Are you looking to freshen up your fundraising letter?  A great idea was brought to our attention to include a calendar in your letter.  In the calendar you can list any time that your loved one with type 1 was hospitalized or at the doctor for diabetes related issues.  This is just another way to motivate people to help raise money for a cure!

Matching Gift Reminder! Don't forget to ask your donors if their company has a matching gift program.  Many corporations and foundations will match, double, or even triple an employee's personal donation!

To reach their goal of $10,000, Maggie’s Maniacs are holding several fundraising events.  One of their sweetest fundraisers is the homemade candy they make and sell to co-workers at their Dad’s office.  Those same co-workers also make a donation on Fridays to be able to wear a sports jersey of their favorite team.  And top that off with the company’s matching gifts equals a successful family team!

Pella Windows – Replacement Division is keeping their employees educated about JDRF and the Ron Santo Walk to Cure Diabetes.  They started sending out weekly e-mails updating employees on their team progress with the number of participants and dollars raised.  Creating friendly competition between the departments always motivates their employees!  Also, in their company monthly newsletter, they are including research facts about JDRF.  Keep up the great work, Pella!
